ART021, the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Fair, is making waves in the Greater Bay Area with its innovative approach and growing influence. Established in 2013, the fair has become a significant player in the local art scene, attracting top galleries and collectors from around the world.
The 2024 edition of ART021 Hong Kong, held from August 28 to September 8, is set to showcase outstanding artworks from nearly 90 galleries across 13 countries and regions. The fair is financially supported by the Mega Arts and Cultural Events Fund under the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and is divided into five sections: “Galleries,” “Videos,” “Expansion,” and “Sculpture” at four cultural locations, plus “The Greater Bay Area Art Week.”
One of the highlights of the fair is the “Sculpture” section, which features 10 sculptures by seven artists from the Chinese mainland and overseas, including the iconic LOVE sculpture by American artist Robert Indiana, making its debut in Hong Kong. The “Galleries” section at the Asia Headquarter of Fu Yisi in the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority Building showcases top-notch modern and contemporary paintings, ink, sculptures, installations, and digital artworks, while “Videos” at the Asia Society Hong Kong Centre screens 13 emerging and museum-quality works from Asia and overseas. The “Expansion” section at the Fringe Club offers a live sensory experience with sculptures, installations, and interactive images.
David Chau, one of the founders of ART021, emphasizes the fair’s significance in the current economic climate, stating that art becomes an alternative investment choice when the economic environment is not promising. He also highlights ART021 Hong Kong’s role in breaking the convention and definition of art fairs by helping galleries and artists from emerging countries in China’s mainland and Asia, including those from the Belt and Road, the Middle East, South America, and Africa, to enter the international arena.
